Are you missing out on your potential possibilities because you have become comfortable with where you are? Are you stuck in a comfortable pain? What is a comfortable pain? It is a mental state in which you lose the desire to pursue your vision because you have become comfortable with where you are as the best you need to be or do.
A story of comfortable pain
I read a story a couple years back that really hit home. A man was visiting a friend and as he was approaching the porch, he could hear his friend’s dog moaning and groaning. When his friend answered the door he asked him what was wrong with the dog. His friend said, “He is lying on a nail.”
This baffled the man because he wondered why the dog would continue to lie on the nail when it was obviously causing him pain. He asked his friend, “Why doesn’t the dog just get up?” His friend said, “I guess it doesn’t hurt badly enough.”
After reading the story the first thing I said, “That dog was crazy.” I thought if he was in that much pain why wouldn’t he just get up? Before I could finish bashing the insanity of the dog, I thought about myself. I was a lot like that old dog. I would go through some of my daily activities in very much the same pain.
I had become burnt out of the daily routine I was living. Some days it was painful getting out of the bed to go do the same routine that I was tired and burnt out of doing. But, I would get up and force myself to go because I thought that was what I had to do. I was allowing the comfort of familiarity to hold me hostage.
Do something different
You know that you need to do things differently, but you have allowed familiarity to keep you living in a comfortable pain. You know you need to make a move because you are not happy where you are and it seems as if life is passing you by. Your job is sucking the life out of you, but you stay where you are – miserable and unhappy because you say, “I have to pay the bills or there are no jobs out there.”
I am not suggesting that you quit your job, but I am saying that you can proceed to look at other opportunities and develop an action plan to pursue something different. You may know that there is a business in you, but you are intimidated to step out because you don’t know if you will succeed. I have become of the opinion that it is better to fail trying than to stay stagnant living in a comfortable pain.
The choice is yours
The desire to remain in a comfortable pain puts your life on permanent hold, you jump on the someday bandwagon and push your goals and dreams to the side until another day. Unfortunately nothing ever happens.
Tomorrow becomes next week, which soon leads to next year. Then next year leads to five years, then ten years. Until eventually, the life you desired to live becomes a distant memory. You cannot afford to fall into the trap of “someday” because it may never come.
If you are tired of moaning and groaning about your comfortable pain, now is the time to take hold of your life. You cannot spend another day tolerating a pain that is holding you back.
You have the power to choose to get up and go in a different direction. You have the power to move from your pain and into your promise. If you are in a negative situation that is causing you pain maybe it is time take a fresh look at yourself; discover who you are, define where you want to be, develop a clear plan of action and move forward.
“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” Brian Tracy
